This list of 27 books along with the 46 books of the Old Testament (including the deuterocanonical ones) was affirmed as the official canon of Sacred Scripture for the Catholic Church by the synods of Hippo (393), and Carthage I & II (397 and 419).

So, the Scriptures are called "books of the Old Testament" by Melito of Sardis and Clement of Alexandria (ta palaia biblia; ta tes palaias diathekes biblia). It is not clear whether with these authors "Old Testament" and "Scriptures of the Old Testament" mean the same.

This book by Dr. John Bergsma and Dr. Brant Pitre is an outstanding and much needed Catholic introduction to the Old Testament. It is my understanding that the bulk of the material in this volume was produced by Dr. John Bergsma.
